April 2018 Favourites

It’s officially been one year since Jamie and I moved into our flat and if you’ve been following The Fourth Month on Instagram you will see I’ve been really interested in interiors over the past 6 months or so. This is partly because I’ve been working in a stunning country and period interiors store, Saks and Hart, since January. And partly because I’ve also been trying to make our rented flat feel more like home.

So most of my favourites for April 2018 are interiors related but I’m hoping to do something bookish shortly since I’ve been reading a bit more lately.

Let me know what you think of my faves this month and I’d love to hear what you’ve purchased recently.

Enjoy x

Rae Dunn artisan collection by Magenta

I’ve been drooling over Rae Dunn pottery on Instagram for a while now. They are just the perfect addition to any farmhouse-style home. They’re so unique and the use of font really appeals to the publisher in me. So on my birthday, when Jamie asked me what I wanted, he was a bit surprised when I said I wanted… bowls. TK Maxx are currently stocking a small amount of Rae Dunn for a very reasonable price. I got my bowls for £3.99 each and my ‘Let’s Eat’ platter for about £12.

Stone jug and eucalyptus

IMG_3058

This is one of my favourite Saks & Hart purchases! It’s a very rustic and traditional style stone jug and I’ve paired it with two stems of artificial eucalyptus. I’m currently filling out our flat with artificial flowers and greenery to give it a vibrant springtime feel. I just think the splash of green makes a home feel more lived in. The jug was only £15 and it’s still available in the Dalgarven, Kilwinning store. You can also get something really similar at Homes Direct 365 and you can get three sprigs of eucalyptus on Amazon for £8.99.

Bobble Bath Mat from Cologne and Cotton

IMG_3257

This bathmat was another Instagram discovery and when I saw it, I knew I had to have it. This adorable little bath mat trimmed with fun bobbles was an ideal addition to my neutral bathroom. It’s 100% pure cotton, fully washable and it feels so soft when you step onto it. Plus it’s only £16, which I thought was a bargain for such a good quality product!

Birchbox UK x Cath Kidston (April 2018)

IMG_3289.JPG

I used to subscribe to Birchbox a while ago but cancelled to save pennies. However, when they announced their Cath Kidston collaboration, there was no way I was missing out. I’m obsessed with Cath Kidston – I have Cath Kidston mugs, socks, a hot water bottle, purse, meal planner… the list goes on. So I had to get this gorgeous Birchbox. I was slightly disappointed because one of my products arrived dirty but I’ve reported this to Birchbox and hopefully it will get sorted. Other than that I was in love. That gorgeous Cath Kidston print and a Cath Kidston hand cream! I also got a lovely brow gel, mini blush, mini highlighter, a make up brush cleaner, free Spectrum brush, and hair volume spray. All for only £12.95 (including postage). I’d say that’s pretty good going.

If you fancy subscribing and trying Birchbox yourself, follow this link and you’ll receive £5 off your first box!*

Upcycling project: TV unit

Recently I completed my first upcycling project and although it’s not perfect, I am really pleased with the overall finished result and thought I would share the process with all of my readers.

I was really inspired to start upcycling by my good friend Victoria and Jo from @littlevillagehouse on Instagram, who have both created some amazing pieces through recycling old furniture.

So Victoria and I ventured off to local charity shops to see what I could find. Because Jamie and I live on a budget, most of my furniture is secondhand (from family members) or bits and pieces from Ikea so I was really excited about the prospect of having something unique to call my own. I had been looking at corner TV units online for a long time. I had been drooling over the Huxley Corner TV Stand from Next but I just couldn’t warrant the price tag at this stage in our lives/careers.

I found this sturdy corner TV unit at a charity shop in Kilmarnock for only £10. Instantly, I had a vision of how it could look with grey paint and fresh handles. I love country and farmhouse style furniture and accessories (even though I live in a top-floor flat in a busy town) so I could definitely imagine the unit fitting in perfectly.

My friend had lots of furniture paint leftover from her own projects so we used that to paint it. It was Rust-Oleum’s ‘chalky finish’ furniture paint in the colour Flint, which you can get in Homebase or Argos. Before painting, we gave it a light key with fine sandpaper to help the paint stick. It really didn’t need much so if you’re doing this yourself make sure you’re not too heavy-handed.

After sanding, we used a combination of a small sponge paint roller, for large flat areas, and a little paint brush, for corners and edges. Once the paint was dry, Victoria kindly touched up any rough spots and – voila – it was ready for its new home. Depending on the desired finish, you might want to use more than one coat but I like the shabby-chic look and felt the one coat gave great coverage.

The original handles were cute and gave a vintage feel to the unit but because I wanted to give it a complete facelift, I decided to replace the old handles with farmhouse-style cup handles and picked a cute knob for the main cupboard in the centre. These were super cheap from Amazon. The cup handles were only £2.79 for 6 and the knob was £2.90. Click on the images below to get your own!

Screenshot 2018-02-23 13.29.52Screenshot 2018-02-23 13.29.45

Overall, I am so pleased with the finished result and it feels magical that not only do I have a piece of unique furniture that I really like, and that cost me less than £30 in total, but that I made it with my own hands. As someone that suffers periodically with bouts of bad mental health, I’ve found creative projects like this to be super helpful and healing. There are a couple of chipped bits around the base, which I need to sort out, but imperfections are a part of life so who cares? There is something amazing about seeing it in my living room and knowing that it’s one-of-a-kind and special to us.

What do you guys think? Have you tried some upcycling?

August 2016 Home Inspiration

Has another month really gone by? Time flies when you’re having fun, eh? August is over and I’m getting ready to move out of my family home into a student flat in Edinburgh so I’ll be on the hunt for lots of cheap and simple homeware ideas to decorate my new room. Last month I told you all about my favourite Scottish candles in July 2016 Homespiration: Candle Edition and I do have some more candle inspiration for you all in August alongside some other gorgeous goodies. Without further ado, here are my four favourite products from this month:

1. Semi-Skint Milk Money Bottle, £7.99

IMG_3354.JPG

I picked up this cutie from a local gift store, Gift Horse in Troon; I could not resist it when I spied it on the shelf. As a student, I am notoriously bad with my cash so if I can make saving my pennies look pretty then I’m more likely to get involved. This ceramic money box is shaped like a real 0ld-fashioned milk bottle complete with a dairy stamp so it adds a touch of vintage to whichever room you’re showing it off in. Also there’s a plughole at the bottom to retrieve your money so, unlike a lot of money saving pots, you don’t have to smash it to get your savings so you can keep it as long as you want!

Check out Angel House Newport or good ole’ Amazon for your own money saving milk bottle and get saving!

2. Love Scottish Candles, £10.00

img_3320

You can check out my full review on Loving LoveScottishCandles but to cut the long story short: these candles are gorgeous. Their Lavender & Camomile scent is the perfect bed-and-bath-time treat and there are loads more fragrances to choose from. Each candle is unique and has a strong fragrance so every one of your guests will be complimenting the lovely scent when they walk through the door. They come beautifully packaged in little gift boxes and each glass tumbler comes with a special Made With Love stamp.

Grab your own beautiful Love Scottish Candle on their website.

3. Light Box, £9.99

IMG_3109.jpeg

I have been wanting my own lightbox for a while because they just look so pretty in your Instagram pictures. It’s all about the Insta aesthetic after all! So when I saw this in New Look for only a tenner, I had to have it. You can customise your lightbox with a variety of different messages for every occasion and event. I love how versatile it is and it has an amazing vintage Hollywood cinema vibe. You might have already spotted mine in Zina’s Vanity Femme Glow Dust Review.

Unfortunately, New Look don’t seem to be selling their lightboxes online but I recommend you check out their homeware shop right now there were SO many things I wanted to buy. Next time I get paid I will definitely be getting a few goodies from there like this Bronze Hanging Light Bulb. You can buy a similar lightbox here though.

4. Breathe Magazine, £5.99

IMG_4986.jpeg

It’s not exactly homeware but it will look perfect on your coffee table. I just had to share this magazine with you all because I’m in love. It covers a range of amazing topics from wellbeing and mindfulness to creativity and travel. I have been reading it slowly, about an article a night, because I want to savour every last dreamy drop. There are so many hints and tips for living a healthy lifestyle and I’m not just talking about their piece on Top 10 Superfoods! They focus on a healthy mind too and inspire their readers to take up postitive habits like letterwriting, colouring, yoga and meditation. Like I said, it’s one for the coffee table and sharing with all your friends and family.

Check out their website and grab Issue 1 in your nearest quality magazine stockist. I can’t wait for Issue 2 already!

What homeware items are you loving? Autumn is near so it’s time to stock up on cosy candles and fluffy throws. Let me know your fave Autumn must-haves on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Loving LoveScottishCandles

It’s been a while since I’ve introduced you all to a new candle. Autumn is coming which means it is time to invest in knitwear and cosy candles to get you through the colder weather. LoveScottishCandles is the latest on my homeware must-have list and here’s why…

1000x400.jpg

Based in Hawick in the Scottish borders, LoveScottishCandles is proof that Scotland are making the best candles you can buy. As their name and quaint labels suggest, their products are crafted with a lot of love. Attention to detail is high and lighting one of these cuties will give you the warm-and-fuzzy feeling that we long for as Autumn approaches.  They smell wonderful, come in a range of fragrances from country to luxury and are beautifully packaged.

What beautiful candles! The fragrances are all devine and last for ages, I can smell them even when they’re not lit. Burn time is great too. I get lots of compliments when I have guests round, they all ask where I got them from. Great little purchase.

LoveScottishCandles not only offer a gorgeous selection of candles but they have been posting updates of their current self-build on their social media sites so follow them on the links at the bottom to get some DIY inspiration, photos of Scottish landscapes and behind-the-scenes making of their candles. Their social media pages add a touch of personal to every purchase; I love knowing where and who my products are coming from. Too often we buy into nameless and faceless corporations and where is the fun in that?

Wow! What can I say other than these candles are a must! They are amazing, the fragrance’s are fabulous and linger when they’re not even lit, you walk into the room and you can smell the fragrance. A hard day at work , light one of these in the bathroom have a long bath , have another one in the living room and Wow totally relaxed and stress free. I can’t get enough of these its like the saying “a woman can never have enough pairs of shoes” well you can never have enough of these candles. Enjoy.

If you’re into floral scents, there’s Scottish Rose and Tiger Lily. If you like those muskier tones, what about Black Pomegranate or Fireside? Having a dinner party? Try burning Apple Strudel & Spice to welcome your guests to the smell of fresh baking. The fragrances have a high pay-off and you can smell it before you even open the gift box, which means all your guests will be complimenting you on the delectable scents. Browse the shop to check out all eight of the LoveScottishCandles’ scents.

I received the Lavender & Chamomile candle as a gift from LoveScottishCandles and I can’t get enough of the scent. I mentioned it in my recent 5 Tips For A Better Sleep blog because lavender and chamomile are both renowned for their relaxing properties which help to relieve anxiety. That means this fragrance is the ultimate snooze-inducing candle. Run yourself a hot bubble bath and light one of these before bedtime. You’ll forget all about your tough day at work.

The LoveScottishCandles website also shares with its customer insightful Candle Care instructions. This is a big thing for me. So many people complain about candles for not burning evenly or producing too much black smoke when, in reality, this could be prevented by looking after their candles properly. There is no point in investing in such gorgeous candles without keeping them in good condition. I am always getting on at my mum for not caring for her candles properly! Here’s a few of LoveScottishCandles top tips to getting the most from your candles:

  1. Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
  2. When burning for the first time, burn for long enough that all the wax melts to the edge.
  3. Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times.

There is a reason LoveScottishCandles boast Handmade With Love on all of their candles. They are a delight and will add a special touch to your homes when burning. They’re inexpensive and their wonderful packaging makes them a wonderful gift for a loved one or a special treat for yourself.

5 Reasons to Buy Mulderie Wood Candles

IMG_4050.JPG

Mulderie Wood pride themselves in bringing the Highland woodlands into your living room with their stunning handcrafted and eco-friendly candles. Check out my five reasons to buy a Mulderie Wood candle and when you’re done head over the Mulderie Wood shop where you can use my 10% off code FOURTHMONTH10.

1. Their incredible scents.
I am lucky enough to be trialling three of Mulderie Wood‘s amazing fragrances: Daffodil, Bergamot and Baby Powder. Each of these scents is unique and fill your desired room with beautiful smells. I’ve already mentioned how much I hate candles with a low scent payoff but this is not something you can accuse Mulderie Wood of. They use the finest aromatherapy oils and ingredients to create amazing smells. Just lifting the lid, without even burning the wick, seems to fill my bedroom with the sweet smell of baby powder and daffodils. Other scents include apple, sweet bluebell, and cranberry marmalade among many others that you can check out on their page.

2. Their eco-friendliness.
As a vegetarian, I’m all about promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle but I seem to find it so much harder to find ethical beauty and home products than eating a meat-free diet. I made it my mission in 2016 to use only cruelty-free beauty products and candles but it is surprisingly difficult to find the correct information before purchasing. However, Mulderie Wood make it clear that they use EcoSoya wax in all of their candles. This means they are made with 100% pure soy oil. They’re free from pesticides, genetically modified materials, and herbicides. They’re completely cruelty-free and contain no animal products which makes me a very happy candle lover.

3. They are handcrafted in Scotland (with love)
One of my main missions in starting my blog was to promote local Scottish businesses and artists. As a Scottish blogger, I think it’s really important to shed light on the incredible work going on in our country instead of sourcing your products from huge corporate companies. By purchasing from Mulderie Woods, you are not only getting a beautiful scented candle but you’re pushing your money directly into the Scottish economy and in such a troubling economic time I’m sure we can all agree that this is a bonus. Plus, each candle is handcrafted with love and attention to detail – ensuring incredibly high standards every time.

4. Their beautiful, quaint packaging.
It seems a bonus to me when a candle can look great as well as smell wonderful. I love the added touches of the silky tartan ribbon around the tins. There is something incredibly authentic and warming about the silver tins. They look so pretty and dainty sitting on your bedside cabinet or coffee table. If you buy a candle, they come in the most delightful floral jute drawstring bag or if you buy a gift set, they come in a gorgeous gift bag. This makes their candles an excellent gift for a friend or family member.

5. Their reasonable price.
Being a candle lover doesn’t always come cheap. My guilty pleasure has made a serious dent in my bank account over the years but I was so surprised at how reasonable the Mulderie Wood candles are considering how strong the scents are and how much detail goes into their packaging. A small candle which burns for 20+ hours will only set you back £4. For their larger candle which burns for 40+ hours, it will cost you a measly £8! They also offer a gift set of two small tins at £10 which makes a lovely gift. If you prefer a wax melt to a candle, they offer 4 pure soy wax scented melts for £4 in any fragrance you like. To make matters even better, you can use my promo code FOURTHMONTH10 to receive a further 10% off your purchase. Just apply it at the checkout.

You can visit Mulderie Wood on EtsyFacebookTwitter and Instagram.

If you’re still with me and haven’t already headed over to the Etsy page to fill your basket with all these delectable scented candles then thank you for reading my blog. Let me know if you buy one of these amazing products and what you think of them. Keep up to date with my home style ideas on my Instagram page.

June 2016 Homespiration

1. Jane Eyre Quote Framed Print by Bookishly
This stunning framed print was a graduation gift and it is the perfect present for any book lover. It happens to be my favourite quote from my favourite book but even if you haven’t read this Brontë classic it still makes a great addition to your home. Jane Eyre epitomises the strong independent woman and every time you look at this quote you can feel empowered and inspired by her strength. The print comes in a black wooden frame and features a page straight out of the book as the background to the quote. However, if you’re really not a fan of the Brontë sisters, Bookishly also do jewellery, notebooks and greeting cards among other things in a range of different bookish themes. All of their products make an amazing gift for the book lover in your life.

2.  ‘The Poet’ Range by McKelvie Candles
If you have already read my full review on these candles then you will know how much I love them. I cannot get enough of ‘Little White Rose’ and ‘Eriskay Love.’ Not only do they have a high-pay-off fragrance, they also look beautiful on your bookshelf or coffee table and they have a fascinating literary story behind them, which you can read about in my original blog. Ditch your big corporate candle companies and get hours of enjoyment out of a product that is handcrafted with love and steeped in Scottish history. If you’re not a poetry lover, they do other year-round ranges such as Granny’s Kitchen which even boasts a Scottish Tablet candle – yum! Visit their site to find your local stockist.

3. Scottish Quote Mini Hanging Signs & Magnets by Amy Kay Illustration & Design
These little keepsakes are created by a very talented Scottish artist. Each of Amy’s designs are made with a whole lot of love and attention to detail. Not only are they gorgeous and quirky but these mini hanging signs are only £1 each so they make a great addition to any gift. They’re so tiny you could pop them inside a birthday card as a mini surprise for your loved one. They would look super cute hanging on a jewellery stand or pinned up on a notice board. Amy makes a variety of different hanging signs and prints with a range of lovely, inspirational messages to choose from. There is something for everyone from ‘Eat, Sleep, Contour’ signs for make-up junkies to stunning thank you gifts for teachers. Check out her Etsy page here.

4. Patchwork Map Magnetic Journal by Paperchase
I am a stationary geek and I have fallen victim to a Paperchase haul too many a time. It is easily my favourite shop on the high street. Everything is just so pretty. This journal was a gift from two close friends as a 3-in-1 Get Well Soon/Graduation/Leaving Work Gift and I have already decided it is my designated notebook for starting my Masters degree in Publishing in September. This notebook is chunky, luxurious and the beautiful patchwork map design makes it a must-have item for anyone suffering with a case of wanderlust. It would make a beautiful travel journal too if you’re going away this summer.

The Poets range by McKelvie Candles

I have completely fallen in love with these candles. They combine my love for candles, literature and Scotland all in one beautiful product. Last week, I was on the hunt for Scottish businesses to get involved with my Instagram giveaway when I came across McKelvie candles. Straight away I knew I had to get my hands on them. Not only are they beautiful but they come in fragrances like Vanilla Tablet and Aipple Tert from Granny’s Kitchen range. However, while I was very excited about the prospect of tablet scented candles, it was The Poets range that really caught my eye.
As a writer, a lover of everything literary and a self-confessed candle addict, the idea of poetry inspired candles was just too good to be true. The Poets candles come in the following scents: Lady Mary Ann, Little White Rose, Eriskay Love, Fingal’s Cave, Mountain Daisy and Cotter’s Ingle. Some are inspired by Burns poetry, others by Keats or Scottish poet Hugh Macdiarmid.
When I contacted McKelvie candles about getting involved with my Scottish giveaway, I was even more intrigued by the fascinating tale that inspired The Poets range. The woman photographed on the lid (see photo above) is David from McKelvie Candles’ Granny. She went to Ecclesmauchan school near Broxburn where she fostered a great love of books and poetry and showed great academic promise. She graduated in 1911 and her headmaster pleaded with her to study English/Poetry at University – he even planned to arrange funding for her. However, it being 1911, her mother “ruled the roost” and told her “what’s the point in wasting time and money educating a lassie – she’ll gan oot tae service like the rest o’ them.” Heartbroken, David’s grandmother still continued to write poetry and share it with her family over the years. When they decided to launch a series of poetry inspired candles they decided to honour their granny by using her picture (aged 14) on the tin lids.
I was totally moved by this story being a female Scottish writer who was lucky enough to have the opportunity to follow my dreams and have just graduated with Joint Honours at the University of Glasgow in MA Comparative & English Literature. I paused to consider all the talented female writers who have never had their work heard or published throughout the years because of social expectations. However, I like to think justice is being served as Granny is getting her photo on a set of stunning candles and her story can be shared by many readers too.
With all this in mind, I was absolutely over the moon when David from McKelvie candles agreed to send me a couple of their candles to use as part of my Instagram giveaway. I’ve managed to get my hands on Eriskay Love, a lilac coloured floral and citrusy candle, and Little White Rose, white in colour and sweet in nature as the name suggests. They are beautiful. I can’t stress how lovely they smell and their tartan tins really finish it off for me. I especially love the added detail of decorative crystals.
You can check out McKelvie candles on their webpage or like their page on Facebook. Buy your own luxury scented candle by locating a store near you. If, like me, you’re from Ayrshire you can find McKelvie candles in Grassroots Fine Flowers in Irvine, Hayes Garden Centre in Symington or Forever Young in Kilmarnock among many others!
